BEETS

Video of the 2011 BEETS Year!

The BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated and Employable Teens) is an environmental education and green-jobs training program of CommunityGrows. The BEETS is a stipend training program serving 18-24 at-risk teens a year, aged 15 to 19, and is located in San Francisco, California. The program supports youth to: acquire a core set of job readiness skills for the work force, specifically the green economy; cultivate leadership and interpersonal skills; and develop a commitment to environmental stewardship and food justice.

Take a look at this video which includes photos from the year and a video from the December graduation ceremony. The BEETS youth talked about highlights of the year and some of the staff, parents, and collaborators also spoke. Running time is under ten minutes. Enjoy!

  1. Every community should be so lucky to have a BEETS program — way to go teens and all who work with them. Wonderful video too!

  3. [...] CommunityGrows is seeking Adult Volunteers to serve as positive role models and mentors for our BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated & Employable Teens) Program, a positive youth development program that provides opportunities for urban teenagers in San Francisco to build the professional skills necessary for successful future employment and careers, using the environment and “green jobs” as context. ABOUT CommunityGrows CommunityGrows, a project of the Tides Center, is an environmental education non-profit serving high-needs youth, especially those living in public housing in San Francisco.  Youth acquire the necessary skills to live a healthy life through garden education, nutritious cooking and eating, and green job training.  We are based in the Western Addition and partner with elementary schools and numerous youth serving organizations to meet our mission. BEETS, a green job training program of CommunityGrows, serves 30 at-risk teens each year.  BEETS gain experience working in community gardens and parks, designing and building gardens, learn basic garden maintenance, and assist with CommunityGrows garden education classes for school aged youth.  BEETS also attend job readiness and environmental education workshops to gain exposure to future career paths and opportunities. We are actively seeking Adult Volunteers to serve as positive role models and  mentors for our teens.  Our next Session begins January 29, 2013  and goes through April 30, 2013. Attached please find a BEETS Program Volunteer Description.  Please spread widely. CommunityGrows actively seeks candidates who reflect the diversity of our Western Addition community and who will be role models for our youth.
