Great Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service on Monday January 16, 2012. Many volunteers met at the African American Arts and Culture Center, loaded Muni buses and traveled to various site around the Western Addition. Some great folks showed up to work in Koshland Park. We got the soil turned, weeding, and planting begun for the spring. A great surprise was two honored guests: Daniel Homsey, Director of Neighborhood Empowerment Network, and London Breed, Director of the African American Arts and Culture Center. A very QUALITY DAY! Thank you great staff and volunteers!

It will be a great day for weeding, planting, sweeping, pruning, picking up trash, and making the park and garden shine. Please were layered, comfortable workclothes and closed-toed shoes. Bring your own water; juice and snacks will be provided.

Another great workday in Koshland Park and Garden happened on September 17, 2011. It was the first workday for our Fall cohort of BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated and Employable Teens). The great surprise was that one of our terrific sponsors, Starbucks (shown above), showed up in force to help us weed and get the garden ready for the fall.

We were also blessed by having three great supporters, Jo Mestelle, Community School Coordinator at John Muir Elementary School, Chef Alice Cravens from Ida B. Wells Middle School Culinary Program (pictured here), and Kathleen Daley, our Nutrition intern from JFK University. Thank you so much for all you do!

Please join us for a great day outdoors in the fresh air, getting some exercise and making our home based park and garden shine. We will be weeding, planting, sweeping, pruning, and picking up trash. Koshland Park is located on the corner of Page and Buchanan Streets in San Francisco. The garden is down the hill at the bottom part of the park, surrounded by a yellow picket fence. Hope to see you there!

]]> Please join us this coming Saturday, May 14, 2011 for a workday in our home-based park and garden, Koshland Park. We will be working from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM weeding, planting, sweeping, pruning, picking up trash, mulching and making the park and garden shine. Please wear layered, comfortable workclothes and closed-toed shoes. Juice and snacks will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own bottled water. We look forward to spending some time with you to make this park beautiful for our youth programs!

]]> On Saturday, March 12th the rain clouds parted and great sunshine filled the skies over Koshland Park for a garden/park work day sponsored by Starbucks Coffee and Kaiser-Permanente.  Over thirty volunteers joined us, including many big wigs from the Northern California Starbucks offices, to help us take four truck-loads of green debris out of the park, trim, prune, move concrete, compost and weed.  The highlight of the day was meeting all these great folks and watching Kaitlyn Hung dig for worms in the garden.  Nora shared with her an amazing find–a garden salamander.  See the salamander and other photos on our Flickr photostream.

Saturday, March 5, 2011 the rain clouds parted and a clear blue skies graced our workday at Westside Courts in San Francisco.
Community Grows joined residents and youth to work on various plots throughout the development that were started back in November. There was lots of weeding, digging, mulching and socializing! A great turn out, especially with four lovely ladies from the University of San Francisco. Thank you Liz Jones, resident manager, and everyone for a great day!
