Cooking with Kennard Smith from Firefly Restaurant

On Thursday afternoon our last summer CommunityGrows Seed-to-Mouth cooking class at Hayes Valley South community room, featured Kennard Smith, chef from Firefly Restaurant in San Francisco. Chef Smith brought his friend Nathan Serrano, food truck chef with Off-the-Grid, to prepare Chinese dumplings with the students. Youth from the African American Arts and Culture Complex summer program joined us, as well as our BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated and Employable Teens). After a demonstration of how to peel and chop cabbage and carrots, the youth prepped all the vegetables for the meal. Then they got a lesson in how to prepare the dumplings with wrappers. The youth listened intently and the end result was nothing short of amazing and so professional looking! Then off to the kitchen to fry the dumplings to perfection. Add some rice, and a great meal was consummed in no time flat. Ummm… Ummm. For more photos see our Flicker photostream here.
