Westside Courts begins Gardens

On Saturday, November 13,2010 CommunityGrows joined over 25 residents and volunteers at Westside Courts in San Francisco (bordered by Sutter, Broderick, Baker and Post Streets) to start some gardens. There are many areas throughout the development that are ideal for planting, and we started tackling them one at a time.

The weather was perfect for being outdoors and getting some exercise.  We started with a patch of grass, dug up the weeds, turned the soil and inserted wooden frames for the beds.  Then we loaded in fresh compost.  The kids got a real workout and learned a lot about plants and taking care of them. We planted lettuces, collard, kale, fava beans, herbs, and perennial flowers.

On Decemeber 4th we came back with great volunteers from Starbucks and BuildOn youth from Washington High School to put straw around the plants and ready two more gardens for planting.
