Spring 2012 BEETS Adventures Galore

It was an exciting adventure for the BEETS this Spring, starting off with a visit to the California Academy of Sciences (blogged here). Then off to Recology on February 18th, with the following quotes from the BEETS:
Quincy: “I enjoyed the first part when we met the dude with the jack rabbits and the helmets, and I enjoyed the hawk.”
Chris: ” I liked the hawk, and how he trained the hawk for a few months and it only takes about 65 days for an adult hawk to train a baby hawk.”
Chyna: “I liked the part where we were learning about the recycling and garbage and compost bins and I learned that plastic bags are going to have a law where you can’t have them in stores.”
Jamese: “I really liked going to the scrap store and I learned that the seagull’s can live 45 years”
Emmanuel: “I enjoyed going to the scrap store looking at records and stuff and I learned that recycling is good.”
J’Leyah: “My favorite part was at the recology tour I got to meet different artist who collected other tools and made sculptures from what they found.”
Lyric: “My favorite part was going on the recology tour and see over 2 million pounds of garbage be sorted and also going to the scrap store and buying some yarn and knitting needles.”

A lot of time in the Spring was spent in Koshland Garden learning about agriculture and horitculture and native American tribes! This photo below was a workshop on Miwok Indians.

In March the BEETS toured and worked in the San Francisco Botanical Gardens with Urban Farm Educator, Markos Major, from the SF Department of Public Works, who is also a CommunityGrows Advisory Board member. For more SF Botanical Gardens photos, check out our Flickr Photostream
Finally, there was a great graduation and award ceremony on April 26, 2012 at the Hayes Valley Youth Center, to honor the BEETS work over the past session.
